Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are vital components of human and animal nutrition. These are essential components of most of the animal feed. Though these fatty acids are found in plant products, the fish oils are the best source of the omega 3 molecules as fish oil has easy bio-absorption qualities. Some of the vegetable oils like coconut oil and palm oil solidify at room temperature, whereas the animal fats are generally solids at room temperature like beef tallow, lard, egg yolk, butter and ghee. The solidifying property is due to the saturation of the carbon atoms in the fatty acids and on the other hand the occurrence of oils in liquid form is due to the presence of unsaturated fatty acids. The unsaturated fatty acids are Oleic acid, Linoleic acid (LA), Linolenic acid (LAL), Ecosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Some cat fish fats have special properties. They have all the unsaturated fatty acids yet they exist in solid form at room temperature. This specific cat fish fat has over 9% of Oleic acid, 1.6% Linoleic acid, nearly 1% of Alpha Linolenic acid (ALA), 12.5% of Ecosapentaenoic acid, and 9.74% of Docosahexaenoic acid. Despite having all the unsaturated fatty acids in sufficient quantities and the higher percentage of EPA and DHA these cat fish oils remains as solid fats. This strange property of these catfishes are due to the presence of large quantities of saturated fatty acids. These fish fats have equal percentage of Palmitic acid (saturated fatty acid) as that of the beef tallow. The fish fat has nearly half the quantity of Stearic acid as that of tallow. Another saturated fatty acid present in fish fat is Myristic acid, which is three times more compared to the tallow. Therefore, the fish fat quickly solidifies at 26 degree Celsius temperature and below. Owing to the abundance of unsaturated fats, this fish fat has the same benefits on the physiology and health of pets as that of Shark liver oil, Cold liver oil, Salmon oil, and Sardine oil due to their EPA and DHA content. Besides, this cat fish fat has an excellent palatability in dogs.
